Matilda Castren was born on January 18, 1995 in New York to Finnish parents. From the age of three, Matilda was riding along with her parents in the golf cart, hitting tee shots and putting on the green. Growing up in Finland, Matilda tried many other sports, including tennis, soccer, swimming and horse riding, before focusing on golf. Competitive by nature, she quickly established her dominance on the golf course at home and abroad, representing the Finnish National Team in both European and World Team Championships from the age of 15.
College recruiters took notice. After winning the Doral-Publix in 2010, Matilda received more than 25 scholarship offers from different schools across the US. In 2014 she returned to her birth country, with a golf scholarship at Florida State University. She led her team to many victories and was selected for the All-American Team in 2014 and 2017.
In 2017, Matilda turned pro and placed T9 in her first pro event (LETAS Belfius Ladies Open). She won her first event of 2018 in Daytona, Florida, the NWGA Eggland’s Best Ladies Tour, with a score of 69-68-73 (-6). Her goals for 2019 are to strengthen her Symetra Tour status and potentially earn her LPGA tour card through either her Symetra Tour ranking (Top 10) or in the Qualifying series in the fall.
